Introduction and Welcome to Modern World History Class
(syllabus is at bottom)
Hello and welcome to our MWH class website. This website will help you stay organized as well as help you when you are absent or lose an assignment so you can stay caught up. This site also has tools to help you study, do extra credit, and even work ahead. You will receive a handout of the syllabus (that paper that you will get in college that tells you all about the class and the rules and stuff...) on Day 1. Should you lose it at any time, you can print out another copy here. I rarely hand things out more than once, so if you lose something, it is your responsibility to come here and find the document and make another copy, either at home or in the library. After getting your syllabus signed, please put it as the first page or in the front pocket of your government binder. We will refer to it all year as it has a lot of the class policies in it.
Getting and staying organized is big tool that will help you not only in this class, but in your other classes and throughout life. The syllabus will tell you that all you need for this class is:
- a 2-inch hardback binder dedicated to government and government only (1 inch is too small and will fill up quickly)
- 5-6 dividers with colored tabs (no handmade ones please) which need to be labeled:
a) Tests and Quizzes b) PowerPoint/Notes, c) Vocab/Crosswords, d) Maps, and e) Label this tab anything you like if you want.
- a highlighter
- some paper
- pen and pencil
That's it. The rest we'll cover in class and as we go.
It is, of course, very hard to cover the history of the world in less than 5 months, or about 90 school days. What do we leave in and what do we leave out? There is so much in each part of the story that I would love to go into more detail with you to share their cool connections with your world today. If you already like history, you will love what we will study this year. If you don't care about history, you're still going to like it because, in the end, it is about you and your family and how you ended up where you are today. If I don't have you appreciating your history by the end of this course, you need to tell me :).
FCPS divides this Modern World History class into units. There are 4 Units in Term 1:
1 - Foundations of Modern World History (Review of what you learned in elementary school about ancient civilizations like Greece and Rome and more, 5000 BC - AD 1300s, "Wait for it."...).
2 - How Trade and Travel Changed the World (The Renaissance & Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Exploration Age, ...)
3 - Revolutions and Reaction (The Enlightenment, Scientific Revolution, French Revolution and scale model guillotine, Latin American Revolutions ...)
4- The Industrial Revolution (connects with just about everything you do today...)
There are 3 Units in Term 2:
5 - Imperialism & Nationalism (European colonization in Africa and the effects today, Spanish-American War, U.S. Annexation of Hawaii, Panama Canal, India's Independence from Britain and Gandhi...)
6- Crisis & Change (WWI, The Russian Revolution, WWII, and the Cold War)
7- The Modern World (Israel & Palestine, China & Tibet, and current events which we have kept up with throughout the year through 10-min. Student News clips.)
Throughout the course, we will also be learning about our national and world geography. There will be a series of 6-7 geo quizzes throughout the year which will culminate in a geography exam at the end of the semester. It is very easy to do well on these quizzes with minimal effort. All the tools are provided. Students also have one week to retake their geo quizzes if they want to earn a better grade. If you prepare throughout the semester for each quiz, then the exam at the end of the year is a guaranteed A if not a 100%. Please click below for the syllabus or layout of the final geography exam. I'm excited for another year of world history and the travels we'll explore together!
